Gum problem
Many people have gum problems and don't even know it. At the English Dental Practice our expert team will complete a check of your gums every time you visit for a check-up. In so many ways this is the most important aspect of your examination as gum problems are often silent, and only become evident when it is too late.
Gum disease is know in the trade as Periodontal Disease or "perio" and is caused by a combination of different factors. Periodontal disease is when bone and supporting structures are lost around the teeth. It starts with a reddish area around the gumline and plaque. This plaque then gets hardened by the calcium in your spit (a bit like lime scale on your kettle). This scale (or Calculus) makes a nice living area for bad bacteria to live in and when your body tries to get rid of these, the damage happens.
Gum disease can affect you at any stage in life but often sneaks up without you knowing.
